Dumbledore later states that from this point on, the school never could keep a teacher for this position longer than a year. Furious, Voldemort left Hogwarts for good. Because of this (and also the fact, that he didn't trust Riddle one bit), Dumbledore denied Voldemort's request. Dumbledore, being aware of what Voldemort was doing with his followers and knowing the direction they were heading, feared that Voldemort was going to use this position to recruit students into a future army. He never said which subject he wanted to teach, but it was quite evident that it was Defense Against The Dark Arts. As soon as Albus Dumbledore took on the position as headmaster, Voldemort (no officially using that name) returned and asked him for a job. Professor Dippet, who was quite fond of Tom, told him that he was a bit too young to be a teacher and encouraged him to try again a few years later. The professor who was teaching that subject at the Time, Galatea Merrythought, was heading towards retirement, which Tom was aware of. Immediately after the young Voldemort, still using his real name Tom Riddle officially by that time, graduated from Hogwarts, he asked the headmaster Armando Dippet to appoint him as the new teacher for Defense Against The Dark Arts.
